Newsletter Articles

President’s Message

Welcome to the first e-newsletter to be published by the Professional Teachers’ Association of the Northern Territory. The e-newsletter will occur twice a Term, informing teaching associations of all the latest news on PTANT, upcoming events and grant opportunities. The e-newsletter is in its infancy, however this exciting new initiative will strengthen and grow PTANT’s relationship with member associations. This platform is key to our strategy and commitment to make PTANT more transparent, contactable and for associations to easily access information. Please check out PTANT’s new website by clicking on Visit our Website on the tab above.

PTANT has made some exciting decisions over the past year that really underline our commitment – providing Territory teachers with professional development opportunities via grants that ease costs for conferences, governance and professional development. We are committed to working closer with our associations and endeavour to support their needs. To reflect this, we hope to provide administrative support to teaching associations through our Executive Officer if and when required.

It is a privilege to lead this association, as we enter such a period of progress.

We encourage all teaching associations to contact the Executive Officer for the opportunity to share or have future articles in the PTANT newsletter.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM next month. Do please consider a role in PTANT as the work of teachers leading teachers is critical to the success of young Territorians.

John Sarev

EO

The Department of Education has provided funding for a full time Executive Officer to assist PTANT for operational and functional requirements. This is the first time PTANT has had a paid position which was created in September 2015. Markus Tumuls currently works in this role and began working as the EO in late February. The Executive Officer is the main point of contact for all PTANT matters. If your teaching association needs any support please use the request for support form found on our website. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Storage Space

As a result of the survey conducted late last year PTANT has invested in a storage space for teaching associations. The storage space will help alleviate costs and provide a secure location for teaching associations seeking to store documents, materials and miscellaneous items needed in order to operate their association. Space Base is a storage facility located at 21 De Latour Street, Coconut Grove, Darwin, 0810. If you want to use PTANT’s storage space please contact markus.tumuls@nt.gov.au for further information.

Round One Grant Applications

Round one grant applications closed on the 10 March. On the 11 March the PTANT management committee met and assessed the grant applications; on 17 March the grant letters were sent out to all applicants. In summary, $150,763 will be provided to fifteen associations in Semester One 2016, with six of the grants ($55,000) specifically for Festival of Teaching activities. PTANT was very pleased with the number of grant applications received and the amount of teaching associations that applied. For those associations that were unsuccessful in their grant applications PTANT encourages to apply again in round 2, semester 2 later this year. More information about round 2 grants can be found at PTANT’s website.

Festival of Teaching (FoT)

The 2nd Festival of Teaching will occur on 26 and 27 August 2016 at Darwin High School. The festival provides teachers with the opportunity to engage in quality professional learning, to facilitate their knowledge and create networking opportunities as a result of a collaborative effort between teaching associations of the Northern Territory. This year’s theme is Sharing success: shaping our future!

In 2015 the Festival of Teaching was created by a group of dedicated Territory teachers from a variety of disciplines, to provide a forum for showcasing best practice in the NT. PTANT has committed $15,000 to the Festival of Teaching which the Department of Education has kindly matched to result in $30,000 towards the event. This financial commitment will cement the Festival of Teaching as the key event for Territory teachers.
